Age is represented as intimidating, deviant and aggressive in many ways in this clip. The use of dialogue(digetic), camera angles and Miss-en-Scene, Editing and Sound presents the teenagers in these ways. However there is a theme of love and care shown through one character in the clip, this character also plays a role of being a victim, which gives a clear image to the two different sides of teenagers in society.
The use of different Camera angles represents the teenagers as intimidating and aggressive. An example of this is The Close-up(CU ) shot used to focus on the boy with the red hooded jacket's facial expression. The boy's hard facial expressions represent the aggressive and intimidating side of the teenagers in society. Also as the camera uses a low angle shot, and the audience would look up to the boy, it presents the boy as being dominant and powerful towards the victim. A further use of dialogue such as, "black attack" is also used to represent the teenagers as intimidating and aggressive. The use of racist language gives the audience a clear understanding of the on screen social group, which is intimidating and aggressive. Moreover, the use of two shots mixed together also adds to the representation of teenagers being intimidating and dominant in society. Medium
Long shot (MLS) and Over-the-Shoulder (OTS) shot have been used to show this. The M.L.S allows the audience to see how the group of boys
dominate the boy in blue shirt (victim), this also allows the audience to see the intimidating side of the teenage society. O.T.S shot also allows the audience to see how the three boys (in a group) dominate the victim by crowding around him this makes them seem more powerful and deviant than the boy in the blue shirt. The victim's body language also suggests that he is the one being intimidated by the group of boys, as the boy had his hands in his pockets show that he is scared by the boys. In addition, the height is also used to show the on screen social group as; deviant and aggressive teenagers as intimidating. Because all the boys in the group are taller than the victim, it allows the audience to see them as the more powerful and dominating social group. Furthermore, Miss-en-scene is also used in this clip to present the group of teenagers as intimidating and aggressive. The aggressive teenagers are dressed in hoddies and track-suits which some audiences would assume them as being coarse. Also the bright Red colour of the intimidating boy, could be used to show and represent him as aggressive and dangerous towards the victim. His jacket colour could also
be a sign to represent danger and trouble. However, Age, through teenagers is also represented as Caring and loving, due to one character in the clip. This character plays the role of the 'Victim' in the clip. He shows a different side of teenagers in society. The Camera angle technique of Medium shot is used to focus the audience's attention on the on screen social group's facial expression, which are shown to be happy and positive. At this point and the interaction between this youth and the person on the phone, the camera tracks the movement of the boy because he is portrayed as being the protagonist in the clip. In this particular sequence, age is being represented as being
carefree, loving and exciting. His brash movement when he lifts his arms suggests a feeling of being carefree. A further use of dialogue also added to show the positive and caring side of teenagers. The positive dialogue such as, "I love you" shows this. Also the use of costume that this teenager is wearing (Miss-en-Scene) also help the audience to understand the more optimistic side of the teenagers in society. His sporty uniform shows his interest in school and education, however, in contrast to the other pessimistic on screen social group, audiences can see the clear differences between the two teenage groups. Simultaneously, the use of high and bright lighting is used throughout the 1
-2 minutes of the clip to supprort the caring, positive and happy side of the teenagers in society. Furthermore, there are many different use of Editing techniques which are used to show and represent, Age as Intimidating and trouble making. The use of the Motivated Cut (editing technique) shows this. The Close Up shot used to focus on the victim's facial expression which then is evident by the blurred background. As then, the Motivated Cut is used to show why the Victim is scared. Audiences automatically know that the teenagers that the Victim is looking at, are the ones who are represented as Intimidating and Trouble maker
s. In Addition, Quicking Cutting Rhythm is used to show and contrast the two different sides of teenagers. The victim is shown as care-free who creates Peace, whereas the Perpetrators are shown as aggressive, dominant and intimidating who create Trouble. The shots between the scenes (from beginning, where the victim is shown to the middle where the trouble makers are shown) change quicker to build on the tension, this allows the audiences to assume what is about to happen. A further editing technique used in this clip is: Matched-Cut. This technique is used to show how The Trouble teenagers interrrupt the Victim, who creates Peace and represents positive side of the teenagers in society. Additionally, Sound is also used in this clip to build on tension and show the two differnet representaions of Age.The use of, non-digetic sound is used when the trouble makers are shown, only their loud, and aggressive dialogue(digetic sound) such as, "black attack" is heard by the audiences, this shows a jump between the calm and soft music which is used to show the good side of teenagers and to the represntation of the trouble makers in society.
Finally, this clip uses all 4 film techniques:
- Camrea Angles
- Editing
- Miss en Scene
- Sound
to show and represent the Age of teenagers in society as intimidating, aggressive, dominating and troublesome. However, these techniques are also used to represent the Age of teenagers as care-free, loving and caring of society.
